SOYO welcomes the new Leeds Playhouse

The previously named West Yorkshire Playhouse will be undergoing a major redevelopment, and if you haven’t guessed already, a name change. We’re excited about the change. There is a lot of activity already happening in SOYO and so much more in the works just waiting to get started. We have always had a great relationship with Leeds Playhouse and this will continue through our contribution as Principal Capital Partners, sharing this title with our good friends and soon to be SOYO residents, Moda as well as Irwin Mitchell.

During the last half century, the Playhouse has delivered hundreds of stories through it’s plays, reaching millions of people, created a home for emerging artists and ground-breaking productions and truly has been the heartbeat of the city. None of this is set to change anytime soon.

These new development plans cement just how important the Playhouse is to the city. Construction begins now and will include a new city facing entrance and studio theatre in the £15m refit. To continue the great work and the provision of culture and live performance for the city and those that travel afar, the temporary Pop Up theatre, in association with SOYO Leeds will be created by transforming one of the current workshop areas. Leeds Playhouse will be working with an ensemble of actors throughout the year, creating a body of work created specifically for the pop-up theatre, as well as out in new places across the city.

As the area really begins to come to life, we are delighted that the Pop-Up Theatre in association with SOYO Leeds, and embraces the SOYO name and all the exciting and positive plans we are working on with our neighbours to make the area an amazing living space, with bags of culture to spare. Check out the full list of Leeds Playhouse productions that will be hosted in the Pop-Up theatre and venues close by:
