On Friday 27th October, Leeds will submit its first stage bid to become European Capital of Culture 2023, and we plan to celebrate in style!
We will be celebrating in the streets around SOYO from 12pm-8pm as cultural venues throw open their doors and a range of outdoor stages, pop-up street performances and activity marquees will make sure that the bid receives a send-off to remember.
We’ll be hosting a ‘chill out’ space with the best of Leeds College of Music’s acoustic musicians until 5pm, when we’ll be ramping up the tunes with DJ Craig Christon until 8pm. Come find us between The Wardrobe and BBC building.
Food & drink
The event is completely free with food curated by Leeds Indie Food Festival and drinks chosen by North Brewing Co and their partners, alongside local favourites Estabulo, The Wardrobe, Kendalls Bistro, Aagrah and Impsum Vinoteca
Theatre & dance
Throughout the day from 12pm-4pm families and big kids can enjoy performances of Northern Ballet’s Ugly Duckling, or West Yorkshire Playhouse’s production of Sarah and Duck’s Big Top Birthday alongside a range of classes from Yorkshire Dance taking in rhythm and tap, street style and parents and tots.
Live music & performances
Two outdoor stages will keep us entertained throughout the day and into the night with performances from Leeds Young Authors, SAA-UK, Phoenix Dance, Leeds West Indian Carnival, Aspire’s Sky Fallers, DJs, Poets, Circus Performers and more.
There will also be exhibitions and talks from the Leeds 2023 team where you can find out more about the bid for European Capital of Culture and how you can still help to #MakeLeeds2023.
